![]() As a Douglas County Literacy Specialist, I am available to work with students, parents, and teachers to help improve students' performance in their classes. Students working with me have the opportunity to learn and grow in specific strategies that will enhance their reading comprehension and their learning in all content areas. When working with small groups of students during ELT, lessons are designed specific to the students' needs based on CSAP (Colorado's state assessment), MAP (Measurement of Academic Progress) assessment scores, and on needs recognized by their teachers. Practice and skills gained in our time together should be readily applicable and used in all classes. Our strategy focus is on skills specific to Before Learning Strategies, During Learning Strategies, and After Learning Strategies. My groups are small (usually 4-6 students) per ELT time so that I can better individualize student learning based on their needs. I also work in some of the classrooms, co-teaching and instructing around literacy - sometimes utilizing learning for the whole class and sometimes with small groups. Parents can access information from me during our Fall Open House, Parent-Teacher Conferences in the fall and in the spring, or by setting an appointment. Teachers and I work together in learning and planning for literacy in the content areas so that all students have access to the information, regardless of their learning or reading levels. My job is fun and rewarding as I see growth and learning, both in literacy and in content areas. |
