Language Arts:
noun: the subjects (as reading, vocabulary, literature, and composition) that aim at developing the student's comprehension and capacity for use of written and oral language.

This quarter Language Arts students in Periods 1, 2, 3, & 5 will be concentrating their studies on the following Essential Learnings:

Jr. Great Books

A collection of short stories to promote student's interaction of thought-provoking literature with an emphasis on discussion and interpretation.

William and Mary (W&M) Thematic Unit for High Ability Learners-"Persuasion"

The unit highlights persuasion, especially as it relates to oral communication.  Emphasis is placed on providing evidence for opinions.  Students must give passages from literature to defend their points of view in discussion as well as written arguments.  Opportunities are presented for impromptu speeches, informative and persuasive speeches, debate, small and large group discussions, and critical listening skills.  Studens will also be studying the topic of censorship and participating in a literature circle.
