This quarter Language Arts students in Periods 1, 2, 3, & 5 will be concentrating their studies on the following Essential Learnings:
Douglas County School District Language Arts Essential Learning (3): Unit of Study for Fiction: Short Story
Examine structure of short stories to refect, analyze, and discuss text using mentor text. Respond to, reflect, and analyze short stories.
Douglas County School District Essential Learning (5): Unit of Study for Non-Fiction
Writes single and multi-paragraph pieces to inform, explain, and persuade.

This quarter Discovery Language Arts students will be participating in the following activities: Jr. Great Books A collection of short stories to promote student's interaction of thought-provoking literature with an emphasis on discussion and interpretation. William and Mary (W&M) Thematic Unit for High Ability Learners-"Persuasion" The unit highlights persuasion, especially as it relates to oral communication. Emphasis is placed on providing evidence for opinions. Students must give passages from literature to defend their points of view in discussion as well as written arguments. Opportunities are presented for impromptu speeches, informative and persuasive speeches, debate, small and large group discussions, and critical listening skills. Studens will also be studying the topic of censorship and participating in a literature circle. Vocabulary- Vocabulary for the College Bound which includes the study of Greek & Latin roots |
