We have really been having a great time in reading!  We love reading our Mrs. Wishy Washy books.  First we start of doing a picture walk so our mind starts thinking about the story.  Then, we read through the story.  Afterwards, we use our magic highlighter tape to locate words, sounds, punctuation, etc. that is used in the text.  When your child reads with you at home make sure that they are pointing to each word as they read it.  If their finger runs out of words so does their mouth.  This also helps their eyes track the words on the page.  Right now it is perfectly normal for your child to love reading and rereading the same book.  They are just excited about knowing how to read their first book and want to feel the success over and over again!

Wow!  We have some great author's in our class!  I am so happy with how well we are writing.  Right now we are working on drawing a detailed picture that will match our words.  The detailed picture is very important to the reader.  If they get stuck on a word a reading strategy they can use is looking at the picture.  This is also the first reading strategy we have learned.  When your child is writing stories for you at home please don't help them spell words.  We are really focusing on stretching unknown words out and writing all the sounds they hear.  This will help not only in writing, but in reading too.  Right now we are working on always having the beginning sound correct.

During math we are working on understanding numbers and quantities.  Everyday we do our calendar.  This is a great way to see and understand numbers in sequential order.  We also deconstruct the calendar at the end of the month.  Also during our math time we have been working on 1:1 counting, and being able to quickly recognize quantities to 10.  When working with your child have them point to each object and move it as they count.  This will help them understand that you count one number for each object.

We have just finished our unit called "All About Me."  In this unit we have been learning all about ourselves.  Our main focus has been on learning our phone numbers, addresses, members of our family, and what makes us unique.  We have learned that there are things that make us the same, but also things that make us different than our friends.  We will next be focusing on weather and seasons.
