MVHS Social Norms Student Survey: February 9, 2010
The soial norms survey will be taken by the entire student body on February 9, 2010. The survey is ANONYMOUS, and asks students questions regarding their alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana usage, as well as what they perceive the usage rates are for the student body. The survey is written so that consistent lying is difficult. Surveys with inconsistent answers ("no, I don't drink;" and later, "I got it from a friend") or with obvious patterns (all "a" answers) are thrown out of the survey results. Results are compiled by a research professional and sent back to the school. Our results should be here by the end of March and a quick review will be posted on the website. The previous results at MVHS have been consistent with district, state, and national standards. In areas where social norms programs have been in place, actual usage has dropped. The goal of social norms is to impact student perceptions of substance abuse, leading to a decrease in actual usage. For instance, students perceive that 85% of the population smokes cigarettes when, in reality, 19% of students respond that they smoke. To lower the 19%, the perception of 85% has to change to be in line with the truth. Posters, teacher announcements, and parents sharing information are three important tools being used to get factual information to our students. Please reinforce the messages and encourage your students to "Live by Truth."
