                            A Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents,

The Douglas County School District Calendar Committee has released the calendar for the school year 2010-2011.  Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, both Mt. View Elementary and Northeast Elementary will shift from the 4-track year-round calendar to the conventional or modified calendar.  This calendar change is possible due to all our 3rd grade students moving to Northeast and the 6th grade students moving to Sagewood Middle School .  The conventional and modified calendars are very similar, offering one schedule for all kids, and eliminating the need for tracks.  We have linked both types of calendars below for your review. Our school SAC and Transition Team have provided the following list of possible positive aspects of each of the calendars.

Modified:

  • Provides two week breaks in fall and spring so that both staff and students can fully refresh and be ready for learning upon returning
  • Families have an opportunity to take vacations during the second week at an off-peak travel time, or can extend their vacation beyond one; may improve attendance due to missed school for family vacations
  • Learning progresses at a more consistent pace due to a shorter summer break
  • The two week break allows some students to have a longer opportunity to make-up work over the break before the trimester ends
  • Is a positive transition calendar for students who are accustomed to the 4-track 9 week cycle
  • One week of the two breaks aligns with the fall and spring breaks of middle and high school; winter break aligns fully with middle and high school
  • Provides parents with a few days of additional time with either elementary or secondary students when their younger or older sibling is off
  • Teachers and parents who have "lived" this calendar report high satisfaction (it was actually a parent on the district's calendar committee who helped prevent the modified calendar from being phased out)
  • Eliminates the 4-track calendar, all students in the elementary school follow the same calendar
  • Offers the opportunity to gain some of the benefits of year-round education without the drawback of multiple schedules
  • All new schools opening in the past years have selected this calendar
  • Student contact days = 173

Conventional:

  • Is the accepted calendar for all middle schools and high schools in Douglas County .  PHS and Sagewood will follow this calendar.
  • Offers families the opportunity to have all elementary and secondary students on identical calendars
  • Begins on the same date as the modified calendar in the 2010-2011 school year
  • The calendar ends in late May
  • Eliminates the 4-track calendar, all students in the elementary school follow the same calendar
  • Summer break is two weeks longer
  • Student contact days = 173

In an effort to provide ample notification and planning time to the district, the decision about Mt. View and Northeast calendar must be made in the next few months.  Prior to making this decision, we would like to gather feedback about calendar preferences from our community.  Please complete the feedback sheet linked below, returning it to the school no later than November 13th .  All feedback should be accompanied by a family name so that we can ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to express their opinion.  Anonymous feedback will not be included in our data summary.  If you prefer to send your feedback via e-mail, you can do so by using the contact form located on our school website.

Please take time to provide us with your feedback.  We are excited for the opportunities that one calendar will bring to Mt. View Elementary and Northeast Elementary, and believe your feedback will help us make this decision in an informed manner.

Sincerely,
Nancy Wortmann
Principal
