5/20/13 > News from Mrs. Shannon in the Lion's Den Cafe

We are reaching the end of the school year rapidly and I wanted to remind parents if money is owed on your students lunch account, this balance will remain upon return to the new school year even if your student is attending another school in the district or entering the 7th grade.  If students have money left in their lunch account, this balance will remain and be available for use at the start of the new school year.  The last day I can accept payments at school is May 29th.  Please make sure if you plan to make a payment I receive it by then, otherwise you can sign up for an online account at www.schoolpaymentsolutions.com and pay your students lunch balances by credit card or checking acccount over the summer.  Low balance letters will be going out in Friday folders for those students that have negative lunch balances.  It is important that any balances owed be paid before summer break.  If you have any questions about your students account you can email me at shannon.vieira@dcsdk12.org or call me direct at 303-387-7468.  Thank you for your time!

If there are any concerns with the information gained during this screening, you will be contacted to attend a separate meeting with our literacy specialists.

2/15/13 > A Note From Sedalia Elementary

SchoolCenter Picture  Last summer Sedalia Elementary put together a 3 week experiental learning program called "The Sedalia Summer Experience".  This summer will mark our second annual extended learning opportunity for many of our most impacted students. This population of at risk students continues to grow each year and are behind academically. They need addtional learning opportunities to "catch up" to their peers around the District.  We had 73 students attend this experience last year and the difference that this program has made in our students and the knowledge they were able to carry into this school year indicates that our students cannot afford to miss these incredibly powerful learning opportunties. Last year's data confirms that the Sedalia Summer Experience is successful in raising student achievement and engagement in school. Simply put, many of our students need assistance in order to participate in this program. We are seeking scholarship donations for any amount, as every dollar given is a step closer to giving a student a greater chance. Please consider sponsoring a student that will greatly benefit from additional learning this summer.  If you are interested in sponsoring a student or have questions regarding the summer program, please contact Sedalia Elementary School at 303-387-5500 before April 1st.  Thank you in advance for any support you can give.

2/13/13 > Box Tops

SchoolCenter Picture  We are half way to our goal of raising nearly $1,500 through the Box Tops for Education Program!  We will make the final submission of Box Tops on February the 27th.  So if you have a bag, envelope, or handful of Box Tops please drop them off at the office.  And if you happen to forget next week, don't worry, they can be dropped of at the office all year long. If you have any questions please contact Kendra at 303-246-3193.

2/12/13 > Field Trip Fees on RevTrak

When you pay field trip fees through RevTrak, you may see several field trip charges on your child's account.  You only need to pay for the upcoming field trip.  We realize that it does not show the date of the field trip and it can be confusing.  Each trip will usually have a bus fee of $9.00 and an entrance fee for the field trip itself.  You should have a total amount due on the permission form that comes home with your child.  This will help you with paying the correct amount.  We are unable at this time to put the dates of each field trip on the RevTrak system.

10/29/12 > News from Mrs. Shannon in the Lions Den Cafe

There have been some changes to the menu for the week of  October 29 - November 2

Harvest Bar will not be available this week.

Attached is the October menu with the updated menu changes, it also shows what's being serving Nov 1st and 2nd.  One big change that students need to know is that at this time we will no longer be offering cheeseburgers, only hamburgers and veggie burgers.  If the cheese comes back as an option it will show on future menus.

We are also in the midst of our "Put Away Five a Day" Fruit and Veggie Challenge.  This started on October 24th and runs through November 9th.  Pledge forms will be in students Friday folders this week.  Students that turn in pledge forms are entered to win a $100 DCSD lunch certificate.  The pledge doesn't mean students have to take 5 fresh fruits or fresh veggies at lunch time, they can take 1 serving of fresh fruit and 1 serving of fresh veggies and then get the other 3 servings in at home than that fulfills their pledge to eat Five a Day.  We also are in competition with all schools in the district to eat the most fresh fruits or veggies for a chance to win a special luncheon feast for our entire school catered by Chef Jason.  So parents, please even if your student doesn't want to pledge to "Put Five Away a Day", encourage them to take fresh fruits or fresh veggies from the salad bar to balance out their school lunch.

Did you know that you can pay your student's lunch balances at www.schoolpaymentsolutions.com?  If you haven't set up an account, it takes no time and makes life a little easier.  Keep track of your students lunch balances, see what they are eating and using their lunch money for, set up email alerts when their balances are low and be able to pay by credit card.  If you ever have any questions regarding your students lunch accounts please call me at 303-387-7468 or email me at shannon.vieira@dcsdk12.org.

Don't forget, every Thursday we sell either yogurt or cookies in the cafeteria during lunch.  We alternate from one to the other, next week is yogurt for $1.00.  Students need cash to buy yogurts and cookies.  Cookies are $.50 for 1 and $1.00 for 2.

10/22/12 > The Million Misfit Sock March

Lone Tree Elementary is joining in on The Million Misfit Sock March on Friday, October 27, as a kick-off day for a series of lessons and discussions on bullying, in both the real world and the cyber world. There will be more to come on our plan for "Standing Up, Not Standing By" but get ready to participate in Misfit Socks on Friday.

SchoolCenter Picture

We are all different...join people around our world for one day this fall when we celebrate our differences and take a stand against bullying by wearing mismatched socks. The concept is simple, but the message is BIG!

The Million Misfit Sock March is Friday, October 26, 2012. National "Make a Difference Day" is October 27, and it's a chance to wear the perfect pair of misfit socks to send a message that our differences matter.

One of the many things that we all have in common is we have felt disenfranchised at one time or another in our lives. No one is spared, it happens to everyone. The Misfit Sock project realizes even though we are all different, sometimes our differences can make us feel like we don't  fit  in or don't matter,  especially  when  we  are  bullied  or   marginalized because of those differences. It could be because we might look different, sound different, make different choices, like something that's different, or act in a different way. Others might view a strength or a talent as a weakness or a weakness as something that needs to be called out or criticized. It doesn't matter-YOU matter.

So take a stand and sport misfit socks for a day and celebrate our differences! We are looking for people like you to join this misfit sock movement and help others embrace their inner misfit by wearing misfit socks. Fair to say, your socks have super powers!

10/11/12 > Big Harvest Thank You!
Thank you for attending
 Lone Tree Elementary Harvest Festival!

Just ShutterUP was proud to donate our services and capture the fun.
Turn up your volume and click on the link below.

The Harvest Festival was a HUGE success! Thank you parents for bundling up your families and braving the cold and wet weather. Despite the cold weather, the children had smiles on their faces participating in the games, throwing pies at our staff, buying pumpkins, riding the barrel ride, getting spooked in the haunted house, and spraying each other with silly string. It was also nice to see all our parents mingling and getting to know each other. Our goal of building a sense of community was accomplished! We also want to thank all the parents for their generosity. All the items donated were a huge help in offsetting the costs. This truly was a team effort between our parents, the Lone Tree Elementary staff and local businesses. We could not have done the event without your help - THANK YOU! We are excited and hopeful to continue the Harvest Festival for years to come.

10/02/12 > Harvest Festival Update!

SchoolCenter Picture Harvest Festival 2012

The Harvest Festival is quickly approaching and we look forward to gathering at Lone Tree Elementary this Saturday from 2:00-5:00 for the fun and games. A few things to think about…

Dress in layers! The weather is supposed to be cool - a Colorado fall day! Many of our games take place outside so the kids may be going in and out.

  • Visit us outside for the barrel ride, dunk tank, silly string corral, tug of war, sack races, obstacle course and pumpkin shoot out!
  • Visit us inside, all around the main level, for the cake walk, duckpond, face painting, photo booth, tennis targets and ring toss…just to name a few!

Punch Cards! All of the games are a single punch so don't forget your lanyard with the punch card.

  • If you did not purchase in advance there will be punch cards for sale in front of the school during the festival for $15.
  • In addition to your punch card you will want to bring some cash. We will have lots of treats for sale in the cafeteria and the dunk tank and silly string corral will each be $1.00. Parents are encouraged to participate. We need to make sure Mrs.Persichina and Ms. Smith get dunked a lot. There will also be a few surprise teachers sitting in the tank as well.

LTE Pumpkin Patch! Finally, please stop by the LTE Pumpkin Patch and get your fall pumpkins!

  • We have over 300 fresh pumpkins being delivered on Saturday morning. Pumpkins will be for sale for $6.00 each or two for $10.00.

10/02/12 > Making a Difference Assembly

October 1 was "Make a Difference Monday"

Assemblies began the day and Mrs. Persichina started off each assembly with the vision for our second year of "Growing Responsible Citizens Who Make a Difference in the World". After recapping all of the wonderful accomplishments of the 2012-2013 school year, she introduced Andrea Pauline of Musana Children's Home.

Briefly, Andrea's story is that while in college at CU, she went on a trip to Africa with her sister and friend.  While in Uganda, they saw an orphanage in the worst conditions, terribly crowded and just appalling.  They couldn't stand to walk away and do nothing.  So these three college kids decided to start their own orphanage.  They came home and fund-raised and very shortly after acquired a facility and began Musana Children's home.  It now houses 80 children, schools many more, is a working farm, makes and sells jewelry, and so much more.

Andrea shared her journey: how she saw a need, created a plan, and took action. Her incredible results inspired our students with wonderful examples of what it means to "Make a Difference". Visit the website linked below to understand the journey she shared with our students. Please engage in discussions with your children and ask them about what they experienced today during the assembly and during class time. The students closed out the assembly by singing "Make a Difference", by Teresa Jennings. (WE CAN!)

We are switching our cookie and yogurt days to Thursdays.  So this Thursday is frozen yogurt day.  Yogurt is $1.00 and students need to bring cash to school for this fun treat.

This Wednesday is our Colorado Proud Day...  SchoolCenter Picture

CASTLE ROCK - Parents are invited to enjoy lunch with their students at school on Colorado Proud Day, Wednesday, September 12th. Colorado is abundant with fresh local produce right now and DCSD Nutrition Services is on a mission to make sure students, and parents, have the opportunity to enjoy it.

DCSD Executive Chef Jason Morse welcomes the Fall Harvest Season with gusto. In celebration, Parents are invited to enjoy lunch with their students at school on Colorado Proud Day, Wednesday, September 12.

Morse created September's district-wide menus to feature fresh Palisade Peaches, Olathe Corn and garden fresh vegetables.

Morse admits coaxing kids to eat their fruits and veggies can be a challenge. He's hoping to partner with parents to get kids to try "something new each day."

"When kids are in a different environment, with friends trying new foods, there's a lot of opportunity to expand their palates," said Morse, who expects "…enthusiasm to intensify with mom or dad joining in the frenzied produce celebration." The Colorado Proud Day menu features 100% locally-sourced fare including fresh Palisade peaches, Olathe corn, Petrocco Farms lettuce, Colorado onions and tomatoes, Boulder Natural Meats burgers and Colorado milk.

"One of the most gratifying things about my job, and certainly yours as a parent, is seeing to it our kids are well-fed and enjoying healthy foods," said Morse.

Check your school website for lunch times, and reserve your spot by calling the reservations hotline, 303-387-0336.

LTE will be launching our NEW Harvest Bar lunch option!

Chef Jason Morse will be here to talk to parents and students about this exciting addition to our school. With this comes a new and larger salad bar which will be filled with a variety of veggie and fruit choices.  The Harvest bar lunch option is $2.75 which includes milk, dinner roll and a 4oz. serving of sliced deli meat. A vegetarian choice would be a shredded cheese cup and a trip through our new salad bar.  This is a great option for those that would like more than just the main entree choices and also love to eat salad.  Students who have ordered other lunch choices will be able to take their fruit/veggie sides from the salad bar as well.  This lunch option is not on the main menu as it is not available at all school sites but will be offered daily as an option to our students and they may choose it in their classes.  Please share with your kids this exciting option coming to their school.

SchoolCenter Picture   Fresh baked cookies will be available this Friday, 1 for $.50 or 2 for $1.00, cash only.

I am so excited to get back to work and to see how much the kids have grown over the summer.  We will have a table set-up on Monday August 13th during Classroom Connection day for parents to have the opportunity to stop by and see what's new and exciting in Nutrition Services.  If you would like to add money to your student's account you can come by and take care of that or you can go to www.schoolpaymentsolutions.com to make a payment by debit or credit card.  If you need to apply for the free or reduced lunch program Nutrition Services is now accepting online applications that can be done from home.  You can access the application at www.applyforlunch.com.  Nutrition Break is back again as well and the menu will be up and available for orders before the 1st day of school.  If you haven't gotten a chance please check out our "new and improved" menu site (which will soon have a mobile app).  You will be able to move your mouse over menu items and see a large picture of that item and all of the nutritional facts displayed.  You can also filter the menu based on any dietary restrictions your child might have and the menu will cross off anything that doesn't fit into the parameters of that dietary concern.  This makes it easier for you, the parent to decipher which days your student can eat at school.  When you have a chance check it out at dcsd.nutrislice.com.  Here's to a great school year!

This run is a memorial run in honor of Quinton Sanford. Quinton was a student at Highlands Ranch High School and an active member of the Cross Country Team. Q-Man, despite his struggle with autism, showed perseverance and dedication to all things HRHS. Quinton's passion, positive attitude, and love for all aspects of life are qualities we believe our entire community should emulate.

Douglas County School District Nutrition Services is offering a new feature for the 2012-13 school year that allows parents to apply for Free and Reduced Meals "online."

The benefit of applying online is that parents may do so in the privacy of their own home or anywhere Internet access is available and at a time that is convenient for them.  This is a safe and efficient way to apply for this program.

Families must be accepted by October 1, 2012 in order to be eligible for the 2012-13 school year.  Families who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals also qualify for a reduction or waiver of school fees, including the LTE Magnet Fee.  Fees cannot be reduced or waived without the school having a copy of your approval letter by October 1, 2012.
