Create a multi-media presentation about an animal, answering the following questions.
SchoolCenter Picture   SchoolCenter Picture  SchoolCenter Picture  SchoolCenter Picture

What are the traits of this animal which allow it to survive in this biome ?
What are potential threats to the biome which might threaten this animal's existence?
To answer this question, you will need to understand and describe the biome as well. Biomes are defined as: "The world's major communities, classified according to the predominant vegetation and characterized by adaptations of organisms to that particular environment."  The world's biomes consist of...
  • Freshwater: Ponds and lake, Streams and rivers, Wetlands
  • Marine: Oceans, Coral Reefs, Estuaries
  • Desert : Hot and dry , Semiarid , Coastal, Cold
  • Forest : Tropical , Temperate , Boreal forests (taiga)
  • Grassland : Savannas , Temperate grasslands
  • Tundra: Arctic tundra , Alpine tundra

Use the following websites to explore the biomes of the world.

Slide 1: Who AM I?
Use this as an introduction to your presentation.

Create a riddle about your animal, using the format below. Click here for the worksheet. You may read and record the poem as audio.

I am... (Describe the appearance of your animal, including color, markings, fur, skin, or protective covering.)
I am... (Describe the size of your animal, including height, weight, length.)
I... (Describe how your animal moves and the speed of movement.)
I eat... (Name 2-3 things your animal likes to eat.)
I am unusual because... (Tell an interesting fact about your animal that makes it different from other animals.)
I am a type of... (name a classification of animals here, for example: bird, mammal, amphibian)
I am able to live in my environment because... (Describe 2-3 special adaptations of your animal.)
The biome my animal lives in is called a...
The continent(s) where my animal lives are/is....
During your presentaiton, you may pause the movie to allow others time to guess your animal.

Slide 2: Overview of animal

A jpg of your Inspiration web of your animal traits including:

  • physical traits of animal
  • environment, including aspects of its climate and location
  • prey and/or predators and where it exists in a food chain

All of the details for each component should be added to complete the web. Click here to see an example web for your animal.

Slide 3: Location

The location of the biome in which this animal lives. This link will take you to outline maps you may use to print out and then color.

Using information you have found on the web you will chart the location of the biome in which the animal lives

  • Label the 7 continents and 4 major oceans.
  • Color in the location where your animal lives throughout the world. (Do not use green or blue!) Color the remainder of the land in green and the water in blue.
  • Create a map key at the bottom of your map showing the colors you used for the land, water, and biome where your animal lives.

This will be scanned so it may be inserted as a picture.

Slide 4: Climate

Information about the climate where your animal thrives:

  1. Precipitation
  2. Weather
  3. Temperatures - Averages and extremes

Slide 5: Food Chain

Create a diagram of the food chain in which this animal exists.  Use Kidspiration or insert pictures and arrows into a Word document.  Save as a JPG to be inserted into iMovie.

Slides 6-14: Answer these questions.

Based on research about your animal and the biome in which it exists, answer the following questions.
What are the traits of this animal which allow it to survive in this biome ?
What are potential threats to the biome which might threaten this animal's existence?

You will need to understand and describe the physical traits of the animal, understand and describe the characteristics of the biome and be able to connect the two of these to answer these questions effectively. Consider the effect of biodiversity as you think about the answer to the second question.
