Balanced Literacy Framework

Roxborough's literacy program is based upon a three-block literacy framework.  All three blocks should be implemented throughout the week in all classrooms.  The literacy framework is summarized below.

Language/Word Study

Word study block includes instruction and practice in phonics, spelling, and vocabulary.  Phonics, spelling, and vocabulary development occur both in-context and out-of-context.  Instruction will include: Phonological Awareness, Print Awareness, Sound/Symbol Association, Structural Analysis, Conventional Use of Written Language, Spelling, Interactive Language/Literacy, and Word Study.

Every Child a Reader

Every Child a Reader is a research-based, comprehensive reading program based in three essential components of reading instruction: Demonstrated Reading, Differentiated Reading, and Directed Reading.  Students develop skills, which help them identify words, develop fluency, and increase comprehension.  Genre and literature studies help develop students' understanding of the elements of literature and establish a purpose for reading.

Every Child a Writer

The opportunity to write daily is critical to developing literacy.  Young writers not only need opportunities to express their ideas, they must also learn to do this with clarity and accuracy.  Every Child A Writer emphasizes both process and skills.  Modeling of targeted skills, strategies, and the craft of writing is critical to the development of proficient writers.  Instruction will include: Demonstrated Writing, Differentiated Writing, and Independent Writing.

Everyday Math

Instruction in Everyday Math occurs daily in grades 1-6 for a total of 90 minutes and 45 minutes per day in kindergarten.  The University of Chicago Mathematics Project developed the Everyday Math program through a partnership with mathematicians and mathematics teachers.  Based on over 20 years of testing, research, and implementation, the program provides a strong standards-based framework for teaching math.  Everyday Math emphasizes a problem-solving approach, mathematical communication, critical thinking, and practice of basic skills.  In order to ensure the best possible student learning results, the Everyday Math program scope and sequence is followed as outlined by the developers and the program is not supplemented with any additional materials.  Enrichment, extensions, and additional support are provided using program materials for all students. Additionally, Connected Math is used as an enrichment tool for 6th grade students only.  At the beginning of each unit, parents are provided with detailed information about the mathematical concepts addressed throughout the unit. When each unit assessment is completed, a detailed report of student progress is sent home to parents.

Principal's Test

The Principal's Test is a monthly math fact test given to all students K-6.  A student must pass the test for each operation twice to be considered proficient and move on to challenge levels.
