EMERGENCYPROCEDURES

ACCIDENTS AND HEALTH INFORMATION

Douglas County Schools do not have a nurse on staff at each school.  If a student becomes ill, he should askpermission from his teacher to come to the Health Room in the Main Office.  The parents will be contacted to givethe staff further instructions. All parents are required to update their information in Infinite Campusduring Student Check In at the beginning of each school year.  This will be used on occasions when ourstaff members are unable to contact parents.  If a student remains in the Health Room for more than 30minutes, parents will be contacted.

Students who are in the Health Room for any part of the day must go homeafter school and MAY NOT STAY TO PARTICIPATE IN AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.  If the parents have not picked up theirstudent, they will be required to go home in their regular manner.  Those students assigned after-schooldetention must be personally excused by an administrator from that detention.

For the protection of the students andschool district personnel, it is the DCSD policy that NO MEDICATION (including aspirin) be given by schoolpersonnel without a written order from a physician.

High school students may assume theresponsibility of bringing to school and administering their own medication, providing they carry only enough for ONE day. Students who appear to be using poor judgment in carrying and takingtheir own medication will have such medication confiscated by school personnel, and parents or guardians will be notified.  A structured plan will then be developed for theadministration of medication.  Aparent may also request that a structured plan be devised for their student.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSINGS

In the event days are lost because of snowor other emergency closings, it may be necessary to extend the schoolcalendar.  Note: If necessary, upto three additional days are scheduled in June for storm make up days.

FIRE DRILLS/TORNADO DRILLS

TRHS is required by law to have firedrills.  They are conducted todevelop an orderly process for the evacuation of the building in case ofemergency.  ALL ALARMS ARE TREATEDAS THE REAL THING.  Students areexpected to follow the instructions posted in each room or those given by yourteacher and move out of the building to your assigned area in a rapid andorderly fashion. All students will remain outside the building with yourteacher until the all clear signal is given by the administrator.

Tampering with a fire alarm, fireextinguisher or turning in a false alarm is a state offense and will be dealtwith accordingly as a law enforcement matter.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYED STARTS

In the event of severely inclement weatheror mechanical breakdown, school may be closed or the starting timedelayed.  The same conditions mayalso necessitate early dismissal. School closing, delayed starting time or early dismissal will beannounced over radio and television stations, on our district web site(www.dcsdk12.org) or our Weather Hotline 303-387-7669.  Reports in the morning will be between5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.  If noreport is heard, it can be safely assumed that school will be in session.  PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL.  Telephone lines must be kept open foremergencies.  A delayed schedulemeans high school starts ONE HOUR later than the normal school start time.  In this case, morning buses will runone hour later than normal. Afternoon buses will run at the regular time.  Parents are urged to formulate plans with their student inthe event of school closures. School schedules will be posted on the TRHS website.

TORNADOES OR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS

When a tornado or severe thunderstorm isapproaching the school, students and staff members will be informed by aspecial announcement over the P.A. system.  Everyone should follow the instructions of their teacher orsupervisor immediately and without questions.
