The Douglas County Educational Foundation (DCEF) has partnered with Douglas County School District to create a
district-wide funding initiative. In the fall of 2002, the district
implemented a comprehensive professional development program for
secondary math teachers and additional resources were needed to implement a
parallel training program for elementary teachers.
Math is the Path provides intensive, ongoing professional development
for K-6 teachers, emphasizing conceptual understanding and hands-on
instruction strategies. Workshops are held twice each year.
After attending the workshops, teachers initially focus their new
teaching strategies with small groups of students. Subsequently,
teachers incorporate these new sills into their classroom instruction.
Program participants are selected through an application process based
on their math interest, commitment and coaching skills. As
teachers become proficient using these best practices for math
instruction, they also become coaches, assisting in training and
follow-up coaching of other teachers.
The DCEF has agreed to fund 100% of the costs associated with Math is the Path through the 2006-2007 school year.
