Purpose:

To instill a love of reading in each student at Roxborough Elementary.

Benefits:
  • For students, AR helps develop a love of reading through choice and consistency. AR allows students to continuously choose developmentally appropriate books in a variety of genres. At Roxborough, we currently have tests for over 6000 fiction and non-fiction books!

  • AR helps parents by giving continuous feedback on their student's explicit reading comprehension and assists in guiding students to choose appropriate books by defining a reading level range for each child.
  • The data that AR produces also helps teachers to monitor reading behavior and assess explicit reading comprehension and fluency. AR provides information to assist teachers in guiding students to choose challenging and engaging texts.
How It Works:
  • Students in grades 2-6 will formally participate in the Accelerated Reader program.
  • Student Chooses and Reads a Book. The student reads a library or textbook selection located within his or her reading range. Lists of AR books can be found on the Roxborough Elementary Website, in classrooms, and in both the school and community libraries. Students are expected to read the majority of their AR books rather than listen to the book, unless they have an individualized learning plan written that indicates a "listening" accommodation. Each grade level will develop guidelines specific to the grade level regarding the number of AR tests that can be taken after "reading" a book and the number that can be taken after "listening" to a book.
  • Student Takes a Quiz. Quizzes are taken independently on school computers during designated classtime. Each quiz has an assigned point value based on the length and difficulty of text. Points earned are calculated by multiplying the percent correct times the total possible points. For example: A student scoring 90% on a 5 point test will receive 4.5 points. Students scoring below 70% will not receive any points for that test.
  • Data is Collected. After completing a test, data is collected by the teacher. Reports detailing test accuracy, points earned, and average book level will be sent home periodically (Ask your student's teacher how often this will occur). This data will be compared throughout the year to the student's individual goal. This will help the teacher to modify existing goals and better meet the needs of the student.
Year-End Point Guidelines:
  • Each grade level has set a target number of AR points for students to acquire by the end of the year. The point goals for each grade level are listed below:
    • By the end of 2nd Grade: 20 points
    • By the end of 3rd Grade: 25 points
    • By the end of 4th Grade: 45 points
    • By the end of 5th Grade: 60 points
    • By the end of 6th Grade: 80 points
  • Due to the fact that each grade level will set the guidelines for "listening" versus "reading" we will be changing the structure slightly for the AR awards at the end of the year. Instead of awarding the "Top Ten" point earners in the school, we will award the "Top Three" in each grade. Additionally, teachers will recognize their top AR point earners in their own class.

The quiz lists are 150+ page PDF files. If you are having trouble viewing them, please download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
