Donation Update
The DBC has
collected $4,685 from 26 families, which represents 32% of our
Discovery population. To meet materials needs for the upcoming year, we
need to raise approximately $100 for each Discovery student before the
end of the year.* Compare this $100 donation with the average annual
cost of private day schools of $16,398,** and you have an excellent
investment. Our kids are in a special program that has needs above
those of a mainstream classroom. With the loss of funding, we need
everyone's help to supplement materials or volunteer time. All funds
will go directly to the Discovery Program. Donation forms are available
in NRE's front office.

Fundraising Update
The Discovery yard sale was held on June 6, 2009 at Northridge. We raised $725.00! Thanks to the school administration for its support and for use of the school grounds. We would also like to thank the many families who donated items. It was great to see school staff and families visiting the sale. This event would not have been possible without the help of volunteers. Special thanks go out to the following parents who donated hours of their time:
• Vanessa Johnston
• Dennis and Kathleen DiGiulio
• MiYeon Seo
• Vandy Fischer
• Rachel Levi
• Laura Strauss
• Kelly O'Sullivan
• Sue Mickus
• Karyn Roach
• Dawn Pimmel
• Lisa Bernini
• Hillary Tucker
The DBC would like to thank Mrs. Steele for representing the school on the day of the sale.

Socials Update
The annual
Discovery kick-off picnic will take place the end of July at Northridge
Park from 5:45 to 7:45! We'll be asking that everyone bring a dish to
share and drinks for their own family. Plates and utensils will be
provided by the DBC committee.

A Discovery Social (and mini-fundraiser) is planned for early
August at Beadniks in the Town Center. Beadniks will waive the booking
fees and donate 10% of all beading proceeds to DBC! Invite friends and
family, but this is an adults-only event. More information will be
communicated in next week's DBC newsletter.

Volunteer Update
Thank you
to the parents, committee members and school staff that attended the
DBC parent input meeting. The ideas generated at the meeting were
terrific and we cannot wait to move forward! The next Discovery-wide
meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the
school (time and location TBD). We will rotate the time of day for the
meetings to allow everyone to attend at some point. Remember to sign up
for DBC updates at http://eepurl.com/bBtY.
>> Sue Mickus [ lmickusfamily@aol.com]
We are working with the teachers to develop a volunteer needs list.
The teachers have asked the DBC to coordinate volunteers so that they
can focus on teaching - not organizing. If you have not already
signed-up or received a DBC subscription confirmation, sign up to
volunteer at http://eepurl.com/bBtY.

*This represents a decreased amount from previous communication due to changes in competition fees.
**According to the National Association of Independent Schools
(NAIS), the median tuition for their member private day schools in
2005-2006 in the United States was close to $14,000 for grades 1 to 3,
$15,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $16,600 for grades 9 to 12. By averaging
the totals for grades 1 to 8 and adjusting them for inflation, the
average cost for private day schools is $16,398. Note that parochial
schools generally charge less than private day schools but that data is
not readily available. |
