The following are suggestions that will aid in helping to maintain a healthy school environment, keep children well, and stop the spread of illness.

Parents should be aware of the early signs and symptoms of illness, such as:

  - Decreased activity - droopy, tired appearance
  - Irritable behavior - sleepy
  - Sore throat / swollen glands
  - Runny nose / cough
  - Skin eruptions / rashes (students with undiagnosed rashes are not allowed to be in school)
  - Nausea / vomiting / diarrhea
  - Abdominal pain
  - Fever (100 degrees or higher is considered a fever in Douglas County Schools and student is not allowed to be in school)

Parents can help:

  - Check student's health before they leave home
  - Keep students home when they have signs / symptoms of illness
  - Be sure your student knows where you are
  - Give school office current emergency contact information
    - Make arrangements with relatives or friends to take care of sick children if unable to do so yourself.
Please contact the school if your child comes down with a contagious illness such as strep throat, chicken pox, etc.  See the Attendance Page for help in reporting an absence to the school in the event your student is being kept home.

Thank you for your help in providing a safe and healthy school environment.

THE DISTRICT'S POLICY WITH REGARDS TO MEDICATION, BOTH PRESCRIPTION AND OVER-THE-COUNTER,
FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IS OUTLINED BELOW:

Prescription Medications

Seventh and eighth grade students may assume responsibility for bringing to school and administering their own medication, providing they carry only enough for one day and have the self-administration Permission to Carry Medication form on file in the school office.  The medictions must be in their original pharmacy-labeled container, no baggies, etc.  Students using poor judgment in carrying and taking their own medication will have such medication confiscated by school personnel, and parents or guardian will be notified.  A structured plan will then be developed for the administrtion of the medication.  Any parent or guardian who chooses not to sign the Permission to Carry Medication form may request that s tructured plan be devised for his or her student.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Students at the secondary level may carry over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen, cold preparations, or vitamins, but may carry only a one-day supply in its original container, as per above policy.  A Permission to Carry Medication form is not required for these products.

Students who have emergency medication for life-threatening health conditions should report to the office that they carry such medications in the event that an emergency renders them unable to respond as planned.  The school nurse will contact such students to work out an emergency plan for the administration of this medication.

NOTE:  A Student Medication Release form needs to be filled out by the doctor and the parent for any student needing to receive medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, in the Health Room.  One form for each medication is required.
