Married: September 17, 2005 in a hot air ballon over Snowmass, CO! (there were a total of 12 of us in the balloon including the preacher from my church who married us!)

Our "Children ": (At least so far!)

Dooley - 6 year old mutt

Scruffy - 6 year old poodle

Extended Family:

I have twin sisters older than me by 3 years. They are both married with kids. One sister lives in Westminster, and the other lives in Loveland. Between the 2 of them I have 3 nephews (13 years old, 7 years old, and 3 years old), and a niece (11 years old). My parents live in Loveland as well.

My husband, Rob, has an older brother who lives with his wife and 3 boys (6 years, 9 years, 13 years old) in Robinson, Texas. His parents live in Abilene, TX.

I believe that it is important for us as adults to model good reading behaviors by reading ourselves. I LOVE to read and have converted my husband into an avid reader as well! If you haven't picked up a book in awhile, I strongly recommend it! It can be easy to forget what an adventure reading is. Here are some reads I have been focusing on . . .

This summer I have been enjoying rereading the classics. I am reading all the Jane Austen books (EMMA is my favorite although PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is up there among my favorites as well), LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE books (which I plan on reading aloud to the students when we study long ago), LITTLE WOMEN, and HUCK FINN is still one of my top 5 favorite books of all time.

I am not usually selective about what genre I read however. I love action and adventure like in the book THE LOCH by Steve Alten. It was an exciting read from page one that I couldn't put down! (My husband thought so too) It was an adventure about the Loch Ness monster that made you believe it could be true.

I like mind boggling, witty adventures like the DA VINCI CODE and ANGELS AND DEMONS by Dan Brown. He has a new book coming out that I can't wait to read called THE LOST SYMBOL.

I like sweet and magical books like GARDEN SPELLS by Sarah Addison Allen.

I also love historical fiction and someone recommended a book that I love called THE RUNAWAY QUILT by Jennifer Chiaverini. It's about a family that took part in the Underground Railroad -- a fabulous read!

I love to read teen books too like TWILIGHT! I'm a huge fan of the whole series!

I like to read fantasy books like the HARRY POTTER series, and ERAGON series.

There's not much I don't like to read! If you haven't picked up a book in awhile, or you're looking for a new one, you might want to give one of these grown up books a try! Do you have a good book you'd recommend?

I dreamed I saw a studio
And watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a child's mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher -- the tools she used
Were books, music, and art.
The other, a parent, worked with a guiding hand,
And a gentle, loving heart.
Day after day, the teacher toiled with a touch
That was careful, deft, and sure,
While the parent labored by her side
And polished and smoother it o'er.
And when at last, their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought.
For the things they had molded into the child
Could neither be sold or bought.
And each agreed they would have failed
If either had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.

I graduated from Doughtry High School in Colorado Springs in  1995, then went to college at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. There I graduated with a bachelor's degree in English with an emphasis in Elementary Education, and an English as a Second Language (ESL/ELL) Endorsement. As part of my ELL endorsement I had the opportunity to go to Puebla, Mexico and teach an English class in an elementary school for a few weeks!

I began my teaching career as an ESL/ELL teacher in Loveland, CO. I later got my reading recovery certification and taught struggling 1st grade readers in an intensive literacy program. When I moved back to Greely, CO, I taught kindergarten, ELL, and 2nd grade at an Arts and Literacy Magnet School.  I graduated from Lesley University with my masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction: Integrating the Arts. I began my Educational Doctorate (Ed.D.) through Walden University. It's a 3 year online program where I am conducting and gathering research in order to publish a book about Readers Workshop in the primary grades, and I've finished about one year so far. I am currently taking a sabbatical from my studies due to some health issues.

This year will be my 11th year of teaching and my fourth year in the Douglas County School District. From the moment I walked through the doors at Franktown Elementary, it felt like home. I feel so lucky to be part of this community, and thanks to parents, teachers, and of course students, I've never felt so connected and part of a community. Thank you for making this my home!
